A Web Portal is a web page which consolidates information from a variety of sources. Often, users of less sophisticated document management systems perform a timely search in Outlook, a network folder structure, a list of Word documents using "find" and/or a document management system for scanned documents. By consolidating information into one location, users need not "hunt" in these multiple locations to find the desired information. A robust web portal will allow users to search nearly every repository from one single interface. Web portals can be configured to run on a private network, as part of an intranet, extranet or publicly as part of a web page on the internet. No matter what their source, the search engine and portal cooperate to provide matching documents in an easy to navigate list. For this reason, Portals are becoming more popular as a front-end to many knowledge systems. |
